Breathing Coaching

As a voice coach, I am naturally interested in how you breathe, because breathing is the power source for the voice. But breathing isn’t just essential for speaking— breathing is literally your life force and your habits around how you breathe are central to how you perceive the world.

The nervous system and breathing are intricately linked— the two inform each other and signal to you whether it’s time to be in Fight/Flight/Freeze mode or whether it’s time to relax and socially engage. If you have habits around shallow, restricted breathing, you might be living in Fight/Flight/Freeze mode more than you actually need to be, and this may be affecting your communication in ways you don’t intend— perhaps making you more reactive, nervous, aggressive or frozen than the communication situation actually calls for.

As a breathing coach, I work with the natural wisdom of the body to help you unlock restrictive breathing patterns and breathe with more ease, so that you can be responsive rather than reactive in your communication. I am a certified teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework®, which promotes releasing habitual tensions in the body so that deep breathing can happen spontaneously and naturally. This approach is different than a lot of breathing coaching, which advocates learning how to control your breath. There is definitely a time and place for that, but in this approach, you’ll learn to trust that your body knows how to breathe, and how to let go of the reigns so that deep breathing can come naturally to you, rather than be another thing on your to-do list.

Who is Breathing Coaching For?

Everyone. You might be interested in breathing coaching if you feel habitually stressed, anxious, or tense— either all the time or in particular public speaking or high-stakes situations. You might be interested in breathing coaching if you struggle to breathe, habitually hold your breath, or if thinking about breathing is unpleasant. Or perhaps you love other breathing techniques and are curious to learn more.
