This is the second of three videos about how to increase your public speaking confidence using the 3 P’s: Purpose, Preparation and Presence. In last month’s video, I talked about Purpose— you can watch that here.
This video is about Preparation.
Preparation is essential to a feeling of positive presence with your audience, because your body will not help you say something if you don’t 100% believe it. To believe what you say, you’ve got to do the prep. Do the research on your content, ask yourself the hard questions you might get asked. This can align with your purpose— what do you want your audience to think/feel/do as a result of what you are saying and how can your content get them to do that?
But preparation is not only about coming up with the words— it’s how you deliver them. Put the time into practicing what you want to say, so that it gets into your body memory. Practice with your purpose in mind, so that it’s not that you have to speak a word for word script, but so that you have your message so ingrained that if something throws you in the moment, you know how to get back on track.
Preparation is key and is often confused with over-preparation. I have a whole other video about how to prepare effectively and how it’s different from over-preparation. You can watch that here.
